Top 5 Films of 2011: Bollywood Edition

2011 was a great year for cinema. Except Indian cinema. No, I'm not one of those people who look down upon the movies made in our country. I love them for what they are but I'm also aware that they aren't the best out there. Albeit, 2009, 2007 and most notably, 2001 were great for Indian cinema. I could easily make Top 10 lists for those. But this year, it was difficult. For example, while the films in the runners-up list below were appreciated by me for various reasons but when I was making the top 10, I stopped and wondered.. will I ever watch these films again? Are they really the "best" our cinema offered. The answer was definitely not the affirmative. So here goes:

Top 15 Songs of 2011: Bollywood Edition

1.
Kun Faya Kun/ Tum Ho/ Nadaan Parinde – AR Rahman – Rockstar
(Singers: Mohit Chauhan, AR Rahman and Javed Ali)

I’m not one of those people who think the Rockstar soundtrack is the best thing Rahman has ever done. It’s not even close. As an album it fails. Mostly because the rock songs don’t do anything to me. They are either annoying or absolutely terrible. Sorry, Mr. Rahman but rock is not only about angst, rage and pain. We need to talk. But then there are 3 songs which I absolutely love and are probably the best Rahman has ever composed: Kun Faya Kun, Tum Ho/Ko and Nadaan Parinde. These three songs are great and rise above the film.

(Katiya Karun is another song I adore but in the context of the film it looks ridiculous. A Punjabi song over Kashmir locales. Really? At least make one character Punjabi. Since it's an old folk song and not originally produced for the film, I would not include it in this list.)

Top 10 Albums of 2011

1.     BON IVER – BON IVER

I loved Justin Vernon's falsetto when he came out with his spectacular debut album "For Emma, Forever Ago". His music feels like he has his hand on your cheek while he tells you "It's alright, the world is a bad place but I'm here". His new album titled "Bon Iver" is undeniably the best album of the year. The first time I heard it I said "what a great song" 10 times. Yes, the album has 10 songs. A flawless album!
