WHAT I LIKED:
1. The Tree of Life got a Best Picture and a Best Director nomination. Now that is just awesome.
2. Hugo leads the nomination tally with 11.
3. The Adventures of Tintin gets a nomination for Best Original Score.
4. Gary Oldman is finally an Oscar nominee!!
5. Max Von Sydow. Okay. Okay. Yes probably there was Albert Brooks and Patton Oswalt and many others who had more heat but I would take Sydow over Brooks any day. Even in a film like Extremely Loud which I haven't seen and is getting panned everywhere. Max Von Sydow is a legend. I would have replaced Jonah Hill and Nick Nolte with Ben Kingsley and Brad Pitt though (for Tree of Life)
6. Rooney Mara for Best Actress. She was a more convincing Lisbeth Slander for me. Even though Noomi Rapace was brilliant.
7. War Horse got in for Best Picture and didn't get left out like most predicted. In fact, it got 6 mentions.
8. A Separation gets a screenplay nomination. Quite frankly it is the best original screenplay of the year and this coming from someone who loves Midnight in Paris more as a film.
9. Margin Call gets a best original screenplay nomination. How cool is that? Over middle-brow fare like Win Win and 50/50. Even though I did like 50/50, it hardly had a noteworthy script. But I hope the Margin Call nomination makes people dig out this small film with great performances and a cracker of a script.
10. Bridesmaids with 2 nominations. Screenplay and Melissa McCarthy. Miss McCarthy was on my favorites list just because she decided to land on the couch in slow motion that even Michael Bay's gadgets can't accomplish.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
1. No Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for Best Picture. No Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for that brilliant score. In a year where they nominate 9 films, they could have either gone the distance and nominated one more. Or simply not nominated Extremely Loud and Incredbly Close. Seriously, ELIC has 1 nod besides Best Picture and GWDT has 5 without Best Picture. What looks more sensible?
2. No Adventures of Tintin for Best Animated Feature. Okay I'm done with trying to figure out why America hasn't fallen in love with Tintin. All I can say now is.. is the country blind?
3. No Leo DiCaprio. 0 nominations for J. Edgar.
4. No Michael Fassbender. I knew they wouldn't nominate The Gos. But even The Fass?? Hello?? Even though I do love Demian Bichir in A Better Life. Not saying he shouldn't have been nominated.
5. No Tilda Swinton. Okay she already has an Oscar. But her performance in We Need To Talk About Kevin was absolutely stunning.
6. No Take Shelter. No Michael Shannon. No screenplay nomination.
7. The Ides of March. While I'm thoroughly pleased they didn't nominate it for Best Picture or any other awards. The screenplay also was extremely mediocre. Could have nominated We Need To Talk About Kevin which actually reinvented film narrative.
8. Super 8 got left out. And for what? Transformers 3. Tsk tsk.
9. Puss in Boots. Over Tintin. Over Arthur Christmas?? Really now?
10. W.E. That is all.
