Jump on Board, Take a Ride

CHILLAR PARTY (2011)

This is a kid's film unlike Taare Zameen Par (2007) or Stanley Ka Dabba (2011). While both of those films are highly accomplished films, this one has something unique to offer. This film reminded me of The Sandlot (1992) and Stand By Me (1986) a lot. But in a good way. Not in a "they copied those films" way. (Sad, that in our country we have to think like that)

Camaraderie. Friendship. Innocence. These three words together you can only associate with your childhood. Chillar Party successfully evokes such feelings. A sense of nostalgia reminding you of the days you used to cycle to the cricket ground and play with a tennis ball and come back home and gulp down a cold beverage. Life was complete. THAT feeling.

But Chillar Party is not just a kid's film. You can bring your kids and can have a good time too. Although, I wasn't entirely convinced with the way the 'evil politician' sub-plot was introduced but the fact that I wanted to slap the A-hole during the final confrontation scene made me forget the little quibbles I had with it. The politician picking an "issue" seemed liked the makers picking an "issue" just for the film to seem more important than what it is. But the kids had already made me believe that their little problems were really big ones. When an actual big problem came their way, they dealt with it and I was with them. What seemed convoluted before, made its way around you and gave you a hug. Except it hugged for too long. By this I mean the film was too long. Just a tad bit.

The film is wonderfully handled by the debut directors Vikas Bahl and Nitesh Tiwari. Just the fact that they took out such ingenious performances from the children is brilliant. Jhangiya (Naman Jain) won me over and I'm sure he will win you over too. But I can't pick out any one of these children, ahem, actors and say he didn't perform well. From Lucky (Chinmai) to Shaolin (Divji) to Akram (Rohan) - every single one performed like they owned this movie.

The fact that big stars are behind this film's promotion is a feat in itself. With Delhi Belly and now Chillar Party, it surely a good time at the Indian movies right now.
